Frequently Asked Questions

What is Coaching?

Coaching is a partnership between the Coach and Client to help deepen personal awareness, develop talents and hone skills skills to enable individuals to perform at an optimal level. Coaching can be provided 1:1 or in group settings.

What can I work on in Coaching?

What we work on is entirely up to you as the Client. I am a life-long learner, and as such I've continued my training to expand the services I can offer to my clients. Here are just a few examples:

  • Leadership Skills

  • Executive Presence

  • Personal Empowerment

  • Imposter Syndrome

  • Career Planning

  • Focus/Time Management/Productivity

  • ADHD Coaching

  • Health & Well-Being

  • Developing new Habits

  • Goal Setting

  • Values & Vision

Are sessions confidential?

I am committed to confidentiality and following the ICF Code of Ethics. However, unlike what you may experience with clergy, doctors and lawyers, our discussions are not considered privileged for legal purposes. That said, I will always maintain your privacy and confidentiality to the extent I'm permitted to by law. Additionally, if your company is paying for your coaching, you have the option of involving your manager in periodic "alignment" sessions, where we will together discuss the goals for coaching and invite your manager to share insights and suggestions. However this is entirely your decision, and I will never reveal anything personal about our discussions to your manager without your express permission.

How is Coaching different from Therapy?

While Coaching can be therapeutic, it is not therapy. Coaching is not designed to address psychological issues or treat psychological disorders. The primary focus of coaching is forward-facing. We work to address your specific career or life goals, develop new habits, and focus on what you want for your future. If a topic comes up that is more appropriate for therapy, I will let you know and am happy to refer you to a therapist.

A lot of people call themselves “Coaches” - how do I know if you’re legit?

Coaching is not a regulated industry, and as such many people use the term “Coach” without having had any professional training. This is really unfortunate. When choosing a Coach, look for one with accreditation from a professional association such as the International Coaching Federation (ICF), European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), the International Association of Coaching (IAC), the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE) or the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC). These accrediting bodies have rigorous processes in place for Coach training and practice. Before granting accreditation, they verify the quality of each candidate’s training, require a minimum number of formal coaching hours, require mentoring or supervision hours, and require candidates to pass a competency exam. They also maintain standards of ethics for the profession and require periodic renewals.

How can we get started?

We'll start with an initial 30 minute "chemistry session" to determine if I'm a good fit for your needs. If we are, then I'll send you pricing and package options, and a written Coaching Agreement to sign. If you or I decide we are not a good fit, then I'll be happy to refer you to other Coaches in my network. Once we are under contract, we'll work together to schedule future sessions at a cadence we agree on - typically I recommend weekly or bi-weekly sessions over a minimum of 3 months to enable sustainable progress.

Can I record our sessions?

I am open to recording sessions if you would like to have them for future reference. Just let me know at the start of each session so I can activate this feature.

Do you offer in-person or phone sessions?

I no longer offer in-person sessions, as I find that it no longer fits into most clients’ schedules. Offering video and phone sessions allows us to work together, no matter where in the world we are located. I’ve even had clients phone in from airports and hotel rooms during their travels. I set all sessions up via Zoom, although clients are welcome to turn off the camera and phone into the session if they prefer not to be on camera.

I can’t afford Coaching, do you offer a sliding scale or pro bono services?

I take on 1-2 pro bono clients at a time. Please contact me if you are interested in applying. Pro bono clients must be affiliated with a 501c3 nonprofit organization. I also recommend that you check with your local chapter of the International Coaching Federation or coaching schools, as many operate pro bono programs and coaching students are always seeking ways to gain more practice hours. I also am open to considering a sliding scale arrangement. If you cannot afford my rates, please get in touch and we can discuss options.
